British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French warplanes in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of approach shafts leading to the depot... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," he commented. "Including them were a great many British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove militants who threaten our safety, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
